Meet the Winemakers: Julie Medeville & Xavier Gonet
Julie Medeville is born in 1974 in the heart of Sauternais in the Bordeaux wine region. Her family has been producing Sauternes there since 1710. She graduated in 1997 with a master’s degree in wine and vineyard law and married Xavier Gonet, a Champagne winemaker, in the same year. While working with Julie’s parents, they founded their Champagne estate, Gonet-Medeville. In 2004, she took over her parents’ vineyards, Château Gilette and Château Les Justices in Sauternes, and Château Respide-Medeville in Graves. In 2009, Xavier and Julie purchased a « boutique » winery in Margaux, Château des Eyrins and Cru Monplaisir.
The couple divides their time between Bordeaux and Champagne.
Xavier Gonet, born in 1972 in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, is the 8th generation of a Champagne winemaking family. He earned his oenology degree in 1996. In 1997, he married Julie Medeville and joined her in working on her family’s vineyards in Bordeaux. In 2000, he left his family’s estate in Le Mesnil and, together with Julie, founded Champagne Gonet-Medeville. Starting with 6 hectares from , they expanded the estate over the years to nearly 10 hectares of premier and grand cru vineyards. In parallel, they also managed Julie’s family vineyards in Bordeaux, including expansion in Margaux. Passionate about fine wines, hunting, and big-game fishing with Julie, they pass on their passions to their two children, Théophile, 22 years old, and Athénaïs, 17 years old.”
